SIMCOX is a fabric and wallpaper design studio based in Erskineville Sydney. Emelia Simcox started using her skills from traditional theatrical scenic painting combined with contemporary aesthetics and digital technology to create multi-layed, hand-painted art. Her designs have a strong European sensibility while coloured with an Antipodean light. The Simcox baroque designs have so many layers and so much character, we think you’ll be impressed.
Who is Emelia Simcox?
Emelia was going to school at the National Institute of Dramatic Art, with a focus on Theatre Design. She left that behind to focus on scenic art with Opera Australia. This eventually took her to London. As a result, she found herself influenced and intoxicated by the exotic designs that were prevalent in the Caribbean community. She thought the Nigerian fabric shops were enthralling and loved the use of wax resist techniques. Eventually, she came back to Australia and studied graphic design and graduated from the University of New South Wales with a Bachelors degree in Design & Applied Arts. From her life experiences overseas and her love of theatre and scenic art, she found a style. Emelia’s approach plays with light and distressing translates into beautiful fabrics and gorgeous wallpapers. Her collection with Milton & King has been called her Baroque collection.
Let’s highlight a few Simcox designs…
Birdlife has a flamboyant avian theme. Decorative birds inspired by prints and etchings of a bygone era are perched upon a dense and lush leafy background of roman acanthus leaves and stone baroque garden ornamentation. It’s an eclectic take on a rich and exotic era of design. Birdlife incorporates a restrained mirroring effect within the background elements, bringing this design firmly into the now. It is reminiscent of baroque designs through to Victorian grandeur and opulence but with a modern interpretation.
Originally inspired by 1950’s printed linoleum, Cactus combines baroque lyricism with a floral motif. It is a coming together of different influences and eras, making it truly eclectic. The print combines the romance of exotic lands and travel to places far away. The cactus flower symbolizes warmth, protection, endurance and strength, not to mention great beauty. Cactus wallpaper colours range from white through yellow and red to magenta.
Efflorescence is delightfully romantic with nostalgic echoes of visits to country gardens and parks of times past. This design is gentle, romantic and would instantly fill a room with floral beauty and butterflies. This imagery is reminiscent of a giddy springtime day, fun, light and airy with lots of excitement and possibilities to come. This palette of delicate colours is luxurious in simplicity with uplifting hues that will brighten any space. From small and intimate to open spaces, it is perfect for celebrations.
Thistle is Scotland’s national emblem with a hint of baroque lyricism. This rich and luxurious design evokes the Scottish manor house, regal, sophisticated but still lively. It is sensual, romantic and memorable. Fascinatingly, the thistle is actually part of the sunflower family. Throughout Celtic regions the thistle represents bravery, devotion, durability, strength, and determination.
