Wallpaper Trends for 2024

2024 is upon us! Where does the time go? As we leave the year behind, we’re looking ahead at the wallpaper trends for 2024 that we can expect to see in homes, magazines and social media feeds. As a wallpaper company, Milton & King can see trends in sales and where things are leaning. We can also look at major paint companies and their ‘color of the year’ pronouncements to get an idea about new color palettes that people may be excited about in the coming year. We also can review some of the interesting wallpaper trends we are seeing in both patterns and placements. Let’s dive right in to read what the projected wallpaper trends are for 2024.

Color Trends For 2024

Every year, major paint and fashion companies announce their ‘color of the year.’ I’m not sure exactly how these colors are decided upon or who is responsible. But, a lot of time, money and effort is spent in giving attention to these colors. They no doubt have an impact on people’s choices, especially interior design enthusiasts who want to stay on trend. In turn, these color trends tend to have an impact on wallpaper colors as well. If you’re going to paint your bedroom in the new fashion, it only makes sense to find a wallpaper that has a matching element. Through-lines are always important to keep a space themed. So what are these colors of 2024?

Sherwin Williams Upward 2024 Color Of The Year
Sherwin Williams – Upward

“This denim blue with calm gray undertones will have you dreamily adrift in the stratosphere. Pair this light neutral with a cool pastel to complete the effect.” (Sherwin Williams)

Benjamin Moore Blue Nova 2024 Color Of The Year
Benjamin Moore – Blue Nova

“Depth and intrigue are balanced by an undercurrent of reassurance. This alluring mid-tone features an enchanting duality, capturing the spotlight with endlessly classic appeal.” (Benjamin Moore)

Not surprisingly, we’ve already seen some wallpapers and interiors that are making use of these soft blue tones. Interior designer, Jana Donohoe decorated her breakfast nook area using the Dancing Brolgas design in the Powder Blue colorway. She matched the built-ins with the wallpaper using Benjamin Moore’s Steel Blue paint color.

Dramatic Moody Wallpaper

It is interesting that both colors of the year from these two paint behemoths are blue in tone. Their websites also list a palette of complimentary colors. But we must make an honorable mention. Behr’s ‘color of the year’ is called “Cracked Pepper”, a shade between charcoal and black, departing from the tones of its rivals. We have certainly seen a shift from maximalist in color to maximalist in mood and drama. We think there may be a lot more of this stunning dark look in the coming year.

Green & Jungle Wallpaper

For all the color trends that were projected last year and those projected this year, we’ve seen a lot of people leaning into greens, and more specifically, dark greens. Whether this appears in a tropical jungle theme or something entirely different, people are loving the deep lush tones.

Murals

Complete immersion has been a growing trend in the latter half of 2023. We expect to see even more of it in 2024 as there is a shift away from accent walls to rooms where every wall is adorned in the homeowners favorite design. However, sometimes a totally immersive repetitive pattern can be overwhelming. Murals are the perfect remedy.

Striped Wallpaper

According to Los Angeles-based interior designer Peter Dunham, stripes are back but maybe not in the way you think (LivingEtc.Com). There is nothing groundbreaking about a stripe wallpaper design, but it’s the type of stripes we are seeing that is becoming more and more prevalent. Less straight, less solid and even more colorful striped wallpapers are becoming all the rage.

Wallpaper in Panels, Frames and Joinery

We’re starting to see an increase in the creative and unconventional ways people are using wallpaper. The trend in 2024 will see wallpaper being used in wood panelling and lining the back of joinery. An even more curious trend is picture frames with no pictures. The frames simply hang over a beautiful wallpaper installation.

From light blues to deep greens, wallpaper trends for 2024 will see a range of options making their way to our collective consciousness. Stylish home magazines and heart-worthy Instagram posts will having us taking notice of jungle themes and unconventional stripe designs. We will see creativity pushed beyond the boundaries of normal wallpaper applications with pops of maximalist designs in wood paneling and joinery. However, at the end of the day, it’s all about what speaks to you. Are you inspired by the trends? Bring on the new year!
